I'm not looking for hints or anything - just posting to let off some steam.
Damn PHP's string parsing, btw. Undefined $'s inside a double-quoted string only generate a notice -- the same error level that complains about:
arr[0] = 5; //where arr[0] does not exist
(and I could go on -- hah, it's PHP we're talking about -- but it's useful)
I need a better scripting language. Perl is not so web-friendly, and guaranteed to be unmaintainable the way I'd write it -- looks like some foreign shell script every time I look at it. (Tainted mode is nice, though) Python is nice, too; I've solved a few challenges with it - though, to be honest, they were mostly Python challenges or involved bignums which PHP doesn't seem to have installed the extension for. I might even get used to Python's [non-C] syntax some time, but it will take me ages to get used to the fact that it's whitespace-sensitive.
Not sure about Ruby - but I think I'd rather use LUA.
Man, did this post get out of hand.
Anyway, back to trying every possible complex solution until the simple one hits me in the face.
